Amplifying the Digital Safety Movement through Criminological Perspectives

Nakshathra Suresh

February 20, 2025 , 7:15 am - 7:45 am GMT

As a digital safety expert and cyber criminologist, I am passionate about creating inclusive online spaces for communities and harnessing technology in a way that protects and empowers users of digital communities. I understand that most of the world aims to live an interconnected life with physical and online self-converging daily. Through my session, I will cover the increasing need to:

  • Upskilling digital natives and consumers in relation to their rights and responsibilities when it comes to accessing and using emerging technologies
  • Sharing knowledge on deepfake abuse and crimes generated by artificially intelligent technologies
  • Ensuring a trauma-informed and survivor-centred approach for applications that experience high forms of cyber abuse (social media, dating, gaming applications etc.)

This session will target stakeholders from a variety of different industries, including government, civil society, academics, and tech industry experts. We understand that solutions and interventions are being provided separately in each industry and want to cultivate an opportunity for these individuals and communities to understand how social sciences can amplify the digital safety movement. By bringing together a wide variety of stakeholders in this session, I aim to bridge this gap and ultimately equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to navigate their digital environments confidently, responsibly, and safely.
