When did we replace teachers with screens in the classrooms? In the 90s, we had one screen at the front of the classroom and the teachers used them to show us videos as part of their lessons. We all watched the same screen, listened to the teacher explain why we were watching the video, and we participated in a group discussion following the video with the teacher. Fast forward to today, and there is a screen for every child, the teacher instructs them to watch a video, confirms in the system if the children viewed the video, or played video games, and the teacher may or may not have a discussion about why they watched a video. Most often, the students are directed to an online assessment to determine if they understood the video, and then they move along to the next assignment. Meanwhile, the teacher is on Meta, notifying the parents of the next PTA fundraiser. With every passing year, the teachers are being relegated to tech support staff and our children are getting fatter, dumber, and more depressed than ever. What happened here, and why?
